The Importance of Being Pro-active About Your Child’s Mental Health

Although not as obvious as physical ailments, issues with one’s mental health can be just as detrimental to a person’s well-being. The reality is that 20% of children between the ages of 13 and 18 will have a mental health issue that needs to be addressed (1). It is crucial to monitor your child, especially teenagers, for warning signs that could indicate a current or future issue. Symptoms include (2):

  1. Excessive sleeping
  2. Loss of self-esteem
  3. Loss of interest in favorite activities
  4. Unusual decline in academic performance
  5. Weight loss or loss of appetite
  6. Personality shifts, such as an increase in aggressiveness
