Although not as obvious as physical ailments, issues with one’s mental health can be just as detrimental to a person’s well-being. The reality is that 20% of children between the ages of 13 and 18 will have a mental health issue that needs to be addressed (1). It is crucial to monitor your child, especially teenagers, for warning signs that could indicate a current or future issue. Symptoms include (2):
- Excessive sleeping
- Loss of self-esteem
- Loss of interest in favorite activities
- Unusual decline in academic performance
- Weight loss or loss of appetite
- Personality shifts, such as an increase in aggressiveness
